Our First Visitor!

One of our nieces, Calli, mailed us Flat Stanley as part of her 1st grade class project. Each student is given a Stanley to mail to someone they know. The person who receives Stanley is then supposed to take him out and show him around where they live, documenting his experience with pictures and a letter, then return him. As the students get their Stanley's back, the teacher takes a little time out of class to teach them about where he has visited.

A couple of my siblings got a chance to do this when we were younger, but my class did not. I was always jealous and wanted to mail a Stanley to someone. Well, now, being on the receiving end, I feel validated. It was fun to think of somewhere cool to take Stan and what pictures we could get with him. The letter asked for A picture. As in one. Have you met me? I fully inherited the compulsive family gene that causes us to go overboard, I mean "go the extra mile", with projects. As my sister, Terra (Calli's mom), pointed out to me, knowing the people in our family, we could create a whole scrapbook of Stanley's adventures and turn it into a massive project. I really had to restrain myself from doing just that. In the end, I only sent 3 pictures and a short-ish note. (I know! I'm totally surprised too!) Oh, and I let Stanley pick up a few souvenirs to take home, since according to Calli's teacher, this is the furthest he's gone from their class.

The text for his note went something like this:

We had a fabulous time with Flat Stanley whilst he was here in London. We went on an outing to the city. He got to ride the tube for the first time. We saw loads of fun things but his favourites were Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abby and Big Ben at the Parliament Building.

Also on our outing, Flat Stanley stopped to make a phone call to his mum from a red phone booth and waved at the passengers on a double decker bus. He ate fish & chips by the Thames River and bought a few souvenirs, a traditional bowler hat and a "Union Jack" (the British Flag).

Thanks for sending Flat Stanley on his first trip across the pond. We very much enjoyed showing him around London.

Cheers!

Emily & Brent Gray

Here are the pictures from our trip and one of him before he got folded back up and stuffed into the envelope for his journey home.

We got Flat Stanley from my cousin, but my mom felt so guilty for having it for too long that she turned it into a major project. And he went to Orlando, Boston, Canada, and South Korea (all places we happened to travel to). He has had quite the adventure! Your's looked like he had a great time!

That is awesome and I love the really cool places that you took him and your use of "whilst," "mum" and "cheers" in the note. I've heard about him but never had Flat Stanley in school. Maybe I can hint to my sis-in-laws that Stanley would be more than welcome to visit me!

I love this. The other day my sis and I were in Hollywood and there was a family with a "Flat Stanley" taking pictures by the Chinese Theatre. So cool. I don't remember having Flat Stanley when I was little.... maybe I'm just too old. :)
