Date Night As Documented By My Phone's Camera

The night before I came out here to Arizona, Brent and I went to the Dodgers vs. Padres game. We like baseball. It was a good game. We won. By a lot.

We sat in this section,

it was very dirty afterwards.

We parked at the park down the hill and walked in. It saved us $15 and we didn't have to sit in this traffic to get out of the parking lot (which can take 45 minutes).

I love my husband. We have so much fun together.

Flashback Friday - Shampoo

Possibly the best smelling shampoo. Ever.

Too bad they don't make it anymore. I was thinking about the original version while I was washing my hair with this today.

The Makeshift Nanny

I am headed off to Apache Junction, Arizona today to see the Gordon's (my sister who married Brent's mission comp). Melissa is approximately 129 months pregnant. Ok, obviously that's an exaggeration but she is due in just a few days and I volunteered to take care of the other 2 little ones whilst the parents are in the hospital and to be a general helper/cook/reason to stay up late talking. Wish us luck!

The Anti-Sleeping Pill

While I was at Target yesterday, I felt like I would probably have a migraine by the end of the day (the tip off: vision changes & a general "fuzzy" feeling). I should have listened to my ever-so-smart-and-caring husband and just taken some of this stuff at 4pm as a "preemptive strike" but I was being my stubborn self and wanted to wait until I was actually hurting. Well, that didn't happen until about 7:15. One of these days I might learn that the amount of caffeine in this stuff is enough to keep me awake for days. I always forget. So, last night, I was up until after 1am. Today should be fun.

The kicker? This is the only remedy that has a 100% effectiveness rate (bless you sweet, sweet excedrin). So if I want my migraine gone asap, and for good, this is my go-to fix. I prefer to wait them out instead of taking pills but Brent can only massage my head for so long and sometimes sleep only postpones them and yesterday, I didn't want to deal with either of those, I just wanted it gone.

The screen on our camera is deceiving, we thought these looked awesome, until we uploaded them...better mess around with those darn settings...

On Saturday we went here

with these people, they hadn't been since 1995

they had never been here (picture stolen from my friend Alisha, thanks girl!)

thought this place was really cool

checked out the pier

a ride properly named

my favorite ride. ever.

we snacked on these

saw these guys

these guys surprised everyone with a show (we have a video but it won't upload)

LOVE her

thought these looked cool

Brent's favorite rides

irrational fear of these (people dressed in giant animal costumes = freaky)

dead men do tell tales, great ones in fact

souvenirs (the t-shirts, not the parents)

Someday I want to go back with an SLR camera and just spend all day taking great pictures. For now though, these will do. They got the job done.

The End.

Flashback Friday - My Baptism

Last night we went to the baptism for a girl who I used to teach in Primary. Her mom is also a friend. Lizzy was so cute in her white dress and bows in her hair. What a big day for her!

It reminded me of my baptism. Some highlights:

- I was REALLY sick with the stomach flu and had a high fever.
- I spent the night before sleeping on the floor of the bathroom because it was easier than getting up and running, hoping I'd make it. (I was wearing my hot pink Barbie nightgown)
- It was on my actual 8th birthday.
- My Grandma Black flew down from UT and I got her and my baby brother sick.
- My step-brother Curtis, waited 3 months after his July birthday to get baptized so that we could do it the same day.
- I was baptized in the same dress as my sisters.
- There were 5 kids to be baptized. I was supposed to go first but since I was sick, I went last.
- The water was deliciously warm.
- I was really worried my dress would float up in the water. It didn't.
- The baptism itself went off without a hitch, it was not my dad's first time.
- I was freezing in the bathroom afterward while my step-mom was helping me get dried off and dressed and hair curled.
- During my confirmation, I warmed up.
- My neighbors came, even though they weren't members of the church.
- I was so excited to be an official member of the church.
- Despite the obvious problems, it was a great day!

Silence

Our upstairs neighbors moved out a few days ago and I just realized tonight that the reason something "feels" different the past few days is because we don't hear people walking around, opening/shutting doors and drawers and windows, running the garbage disposal and dishwasher or just plain talking or watching tv. It's not that they were particularly loud (most of the time) it's just nice to not have constant noise above our heads. I am not kidding you, at least 4 days a week, they would decide it was time to get ready for bed right after we had turned off the light and were settling in. I never complained to them because dealing with other peoples' noise is just part of living in apartments. But I am very thankful that, for a few weeks while we are getting the apartment ready for new tenants, we get our little corner of the building to ourselves.

Man, I can't wait to have a house...

*Brent would like to add that his favorite part of the people being gone is that he can turn the volume up on the tv and we were hammering nails into the wall at 11pm.*

Good ol' Ralphs

Not that this is anything monumental to blog about but I went to my favorite grocery store today, Ralphs. For some reason, over the past couple of months I haven't been going there. Vons is much closer and I just haven't felt up to planning out a week long menu and grocery list so we've been doing "quick trips" to Von's. A lot. I missed Ralphs. I know where everything is and the store brand stuff is so cheap (relative to the fact that I do live in LA). The people are friendlier (customers & employees) and it's bigger and has much more variety in stock. For $105, I managed to get groceries for the week and several items for my food storage. I'd never be able to do that at Vons. Going back today made me feel like I was back in my old routine and maybe making my way out of the rut I've been in all summer. Who knew a simple trip to the grocery store could do that?

Oh Ralphs, what was I thinking leaving you for so long? Please forgive me.

Flashback Friday - Sept 11, 2001

In honor of yesterday being 9-11, I thought we'd reminisce a little about where we were during the attack. I can't say I knew where I was or what I was doing during the moon landing, or Pearl Harbor, or the fall of the Berlin Wall, or when Kennedy was shot but I do, however, have a very vivid memory of what was going on in my life the morning of Sept 11th 2001. Consider this a journal entry for future generations to read. Brent and I want to have this written down so as not to forget the details.

Emily's story:
I was a senior in high school (yes, I know...I'm young...I get it). 2nd period (orchestra) had just ended and someone from the next period class had come in and was saying something about a bomb in New York. I didn't have time to stick around and listen because I had an orthodontist appointment so I left, signed myself out of school, and drove to the appointment. While I was sitting there in the chair, the music stopped and the dj's were talking about a crisis in New York City and how we were under attack. Everyone there was a little confused because we were only getting half of the story and by that point the Pentagon had been hit so we weren't sure if the attack was on New York or Washington, DC. The orthodontist worked fast and I got out of there and drove my car around the neighborhood to hear more before I went back to school. I waited in my car in the parking lot until there was a commercial break then I ran up to 3rd period (German) where the whole class was gathered around the tv watching what was going on. It felt like a dream, or a movie or something. I made it up to my class right after the piece of the Pentagon collapsed, in time to hear about the diversion of the plane headed for the Capitol Building and then see the 2nd tower collapse, live. It was incredible, and not in the good way. We just sat there in silence, no one dared to talk for the entire class period. The news kept replaying footage of the second plane crashing into the towers and long shots from Jersey of all the smoke. For a few moments, I was really scared that my sister, Terra, a flight attendant, might have been hurt but she flies for Southwest so I knew she was ok. I couldn't even imagine how people with family and friends inside the city must have been feeling. The rest of the day I don't remember much. I, along with everyone else I knew, was in a daze. I think a few of the teachers scrapped their lessons and we either talked about it or watched news coverage, if they had a tv. I remember the school being very quiet all day. Everyone was in shock and didn't have much to say. The very next day though, I remember a collective feeling of, "Ok, we're going to get through this. America can do this! We are meant for something great, and we are not victims!". Everyone seemed to get along and be so positive for a long time afterward. I was so proud of my country!

It's strange to think that those memories are still so vivid in my mind. A few random things:
*I can remember what I was wearing. I'm not sure if it was "western day" or if it was because I lived in Texas but I was wearing a blue and red plaid button up shirt, jeans and my cowboy boots. I think it must have been a dress up day for school because even though I wore western shirts all the time, I rarely wore my boots to school.
*I was having a really good hair day. Why I remember that, who knows. I was 16. It's what 16 year olds think about, I guess.
*I remember laying in the ortho chair staring up at the gold fleck ceiling and the dj interrupting a Celine Dion song.
*The school's parking lot security guard wasn't doing his patrol, he had gone into the boy's gym to watch the news coverage with all of the coaches, I saw him go in there as I was leaving for my appointment.
*While I was in German, my friend Sarah was either sitting on my desk or right next to me because we were holding hands and she was crying a little because she had moved from Pennsylvania, where the 4th plane crashed, and I think she had friends in New York.
*I didn't sign back in at the admin office after my appointment and I don't think they cared. I went back the next day, or later that day with my slip from Dr. Mohr and explained it to them.

I wish I could write more of what I was feeling that day, rather than doing but honestly, I was so shocked I wasn't really feeling anything. So there you go.

Brent's story (& 1st blog entry):
I was not even in the USA at the time. I was on my mission in Brasil, and had just over 3 months to go.

I remember that two days before on the night of Sep. 9th, my comp (and now bro-in-law), Jake Gordon, and I had traveled from our area of Linhares to Rio de Janeiro to our mission office. It was a really long trip that we made on an overnight bus ride. The reason for our trip was to renew our paperwork so that we could stay in Brasil as missionaries. Normally you would do this at about your one year mark and not 3 months before going home, but the office of the Brazilian government in charge of this was way behind on their paperwork. So we arrived in Rio the morning of the 10th and got our paperwork done and met with our leaders in the office that day. I remember we went to lunch at the Coliseu das Masas which is a famous place in Rio for all different kinds of pizzas. One of my favorites was the banana pizza. This has ruined bananas for me ever since. The bananas in Brasil are so flavorful and fresh that I can't even eat the bananas that we get here from the grocery store. This was fun as it was Jake's birthday that day.

In the evening we got back on a bus and headed back north overnight. I think we got back to our apartment in the morning of Sep 11th around 9 or 10 AM. We showered and changed our clothes and grabbed our things for the day and headed out. The main meal of the day in Brasil is lunch and so we met the other two missionaries in our district at the home of some members around 11ish. When we got there, I remember the member pointing to her tv and saying "Your country has a big problem going on." On the tv we could see two buildings with flames and smoke coming out of them. At first I thought it was just a big fire, but then I recognized the buildings as the World Trade Center where I had visited with my family 2 years prior. I think they showed some clips of the planes crashing into the buildings so we all thought it was just a bad plane crash. We weren't supposed to watch tv as missionaries so we went and ate lunch thinking it was just a crash. It was after lunch as we were getting ready to leave that the member again checked the tv and we saw that the buildings had collapsed and they were showing the replays. Jake and I were floored thinking that this couldn't be happening. The rest of the day is kind of a blur as I remember trying to go about our work and appointments but with things feeling different and uncertain. Some people would ask us if we heard our country was being attacked, others told us that our country deserved it as we had too much and it was to teach us a lesson, while others still were predicting war. Gratefully the majority were sympathetic and wanted to talk to us about it. We tried hard to focus on the gospel message we were bringing but everyone seemed distracted that day. I don't remember all the days of my mission that vividly, but that is one I will never forget.

We are grateful that we were blessed to be born in this great country and that we have the freedoms we enjoy. We hope we can do our part to live as we should so that Our Heavenly Father will continue to bless this land and all those that come here looking for freedom.

Holy Hurricanes, Batman!

Brent works in the Catastrophe Management department at Farmers so during the summer he is pretty busy with all the hurricanes. He has 2 or 3 tabs open on our browser most of the time so that we can track what's going on. Hurricanes are crazy stuff and we've been following them, all summer. Obviously, right now we are focused on Ike. This is our favorite website to monitor them on.

I am getting nervous for Houston. I love Houston. I may not visit it much but it is where I called home from the time I was 6 years old, until I moved to BYU. It is a beautiful city. The area I grew up in, Klein, is where the temple was built when I was a Sophomore. The high school I went to was fantastic (academically, musically, and socially). I have very fond memories of growing up there, in the suburbs.

I hope Ike can calm down a bit before it hits land.

Good luck all you H-towners! Store up on food and water and flashlights and candles. I'll be thinking of you and praying you are all kept safe.

I'm baaack!

I have returned from my sabbatical in Fresno. The piano is finished (thank goodness!) and I will blog about that when I have it in my possession. In the mean time, let me fill you in on what's been going on with us for the past week.

Camping was really great. As mentioned in a previous post, we love camping. This year was no exception.

The highlights:

Hanging out with my parents, brother & his family.

Playing games.
Tasty food. Bob is an amazing cook, especially over a fire.
A hike with my hubby.
Driving out to the docks and the dam with mom and Bob.
The scenery (including this weird yellow fungus thingy growing on a tree stump by our tent).
When we got back to my parent's house on Monday, we sanded on the piano for a few hours, went to dinner, then Brent went home with out me.

All week during the day I'd work on the piano, and at night I'd hang out with my mom. We watched movies/tv and talked and giggled. It was really nice. It felt kind of like when I was back in school and I'd stay with her all summer long. It was a nice week.

Brent's week here at home by himself consisted of working, studying, watching the US Open, covering for me as apartment manager (it was rent week and new tenants had a lease to sign) organizing the Proposition 8 walk for our zip code, getting the funeral/dressing details worked out for his home teach-y that passed away, cooking for himself, and melting a pan lid in the microwave while trying to make rice-a-roni (he forgot there was a metal screw holding on the handle). He survived but I'm sure he's glad to have me back to do half of the stuff that gets done around here. What a trooper!

Brent came up on Saturday afternoon and that evening we went to Tiffani's house for a birthday party for Gideon because he turned 2 on the 1st. Mom and I made a really cute Cookie Monster cake for him. I got the idea from my friend Hannah's blog. Gideon loved it.
We played Settler's of Catan with Tiff , Richard and the older kids and we spent lots of time holding brand new little Sam. So little. So cute.
Sunday was Sam's blessing which was very nice. With Richard being the bishop of their ward, Tiff's going to have her hands full every Sunday! It took 4+ adults to keep track of all 6 kids during sacrament meeting. Good thing some of Richard's family is in their ward, they can help.

The Fresno temple is across the parking lot from their building so I snapped a shot or 2 of it as we were leaving. *Side note: This is where I received my endowments Nov 29, 2003.*

It was a nice trip but I am very glad to be back home with my man. Love you, baby!
